Schedule and packet pickup

Packet pickup

Pickup and walk in entry run Jan 14 (3 to 7 p.m.) and Jan 15 (11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) at Road Runner Sports in Tempe, and Jan 16 (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) at the Multi-Generational Center in Apache Junction. Marathoners must pick up by Saturday; the other races also have race morning pickup at Prospector Park. Photo ID needed.

Marathon course

The marathon opens with about six miles of graded dirt road from the Lost Goldmine Trailhead, then rolls through Kings Ranch and Gold Canyon, climbs gently to a turnaround near mile 19.4 and descends to the finish in Prospector Park. Aid comes every 2 miles through mile 20, then every mile.

Marathoners must park at the Rodeo Grounds, 1590 E. Lost Dutchman Blvd (enter via Tomahawk), and ride a bus to the start; buses load from 4:30 a.m. and the last leaves at 5:45 a.m. A shuttle links the Rodeo Grounds and Prospector Park from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Idaho Road closes at 7 a.m.

Medals and awards

Every finisher gets a medal and a long sleeve tech shirt. The top three men and women in each age group win awards in every timed race. Marathon course records earn cash: $500 for an open record and $250 for a masters record.

Limits and policies

Marathon runners must be at least 14 and finish within 6 hours 15 minutes, and there is no race day marathon entry. The half has a 10 year minimum age. The 10K, 8K and half accept race day entry at the park if spots remain. Entries cannot be refunded or deferred.

The cause

Where the money goes

The race is run by an all volunteer nonprofit that gives its proceeds to youth groups in the Apache Junction area, such as school teams, scholarships and cadet programs. The organizers report more than $1 million donated since the first race.

About the race

A small charity marathon held each MLK Day weekend at the foot of Superstition Mountain. The point to point marathon drops about 490 feet from a trailhead near Gold Canyon to Prospector Park and is USATF certified and a Boston qualifier. A half, 10K and 8K trail run use the park, and a 2 mile fun run is held Saturday.
