Expo and packet pickup

The free sports and business expo runs Friday, Oct. 9, 3 to 7 p.m. at the James Family Prescott YMCA, where registered runners collect their bib, shirt and goodie bag. It continues Saturday, Oct. 10, 7 a.m. to noon on Cortez Street.

Course

The course

The marathon and half are out and back. Roughly the first and last five miles are paved; the middle runs on a dirt Forest Service road. The marathon turns near the top of Dearing Park Road (about 5,600 feet at the turn), the half near Thumb Butte Park. The 10K and 5K are paved loops. All courses close at noon.

The city's five story garage on Granite Street is under two blocks from the start and may charge $5. Downtown streets close for the race, and the organizers advise against street parking. Bags labeled with a bib number can be left and collected at the finish area.

Shirt and medal

What finishers get

Marathoners get a long sleeve technical shirt and half marathoners a short sleeve one; 10K and 5K runners get a cotton shirt. Finisher medals are limited to the first finishers in each distance. Food and drinks are on the course and at the finish.

Each distance awards the top three in age groups 1 to 19, 20 to 29, and on by decade up to 80 and over.

The cause

Where the money goes

The race is the largest fundraiser of the James Family Prescott YMCA, a nonprofit. Proceeds go to its scholarship fund, which helps local families in need pay for child care, swim lessons, youth sports and gymnastics.

The 48th running of a downtown Prescott race known for its difficulty: the marathon is an out and back that climbs from about 5,280 feet to 7,000 feet in the first seven miles, mostly on Forest Service dirt road. A half, 10K, 5K and short family dash share the start. Proceeds fund YMCA scholarships.
